It happened at the intersection of North 23rd and East Taylor Street. The truck slammed through a fence before crashing through a wall and into the crib where the girl was sleeping. Understandably, 2-year-old Nala Robbins was speechless after the accident. She was woken up around 3:30 a.m. by a pick-up truck that crashed through her wall, hit her crib, and knocked her to the floor.
"I jumped and grabbed my baby off the ground and she was just in shock too," the girl's father Jamel Robbins recalled. "She was just looking at me like… and then she started crying." Robbins says he believes in angels and Nala's mom say the girl is an angel or at least, she was acting like one Wednesday morning. "Her crib is broken in half. And she just flew out, with no scratches," Katherine Juarez said. "I'm the only one with scratches."
The driver of the truck tried to leave the scene but neighbors held him until police could arrive. He was arrested for drunk driving and hit-and-run.
Coincidentally, a few months ago, a nearly identical incident happened in East Palo Alto. A child was sleeping in a crib and a Cadillac slammed into the house, hitting the crib. The mother in that story knows Nala's father. It's a small world and sometimes, it's an amazing one.
"I'm in shock right now because if something happened to my kid, I don't even know how I would react. I'm sorry man," Jamal told ABC7 News.
Nala will be celebrating her third birthday, next month.
