An increasing number of San Francisco murals are turning into targets for vandals, according to street artists who say their paintings are being tagged with graffiti at higher rates this year.

Vandals have destroyed well-known works of art in the Mission District and in North Beach.

Artists say once a mural has been destroyed, restoring it is often too time-consuming and not worth the effort.

The city says they've spent $3.5 million on graffiti abatement throughout town.
