The California legislature began a new session Monday afternoon in Sacramento with a new advantage for Democrats.

For the first time in 130 years, Democratic lawmakers have supermajorities in both the Senate and the Assembly, and they'll be working with a governor of the same party.

The combination means they could unilaterally increase taxes, pass emergency legislation, and put constitutional amendments before voters.
