Animal control officers say the black cat was too obese to squeak through the narrow opening. They were called in to pry the fence apart and gently remove the feline.
"Feline obesity is nothing to laugh about," Field Services Manager Todd Stosuy said of the incident.
Overweight cats are at a higher risk for diabetes, arthritis and other health problems in addition to the risk of getting stuck in tight spots.
The cat had an embedded microchip, which allowed the officers to reunite the animal with its owners. The cat is said to be doing well after the ordeal.
