Retailers can now charge fee to use a credit card

The next time you swipe your card, you might be saving money if you choose debit rather than credit.

Stores can now legally charge you more money for using a credit card -- as much as four percent more on every purchase.

Merchants have always paid fees for card use, but a court ruling now says they can pass it on to you the consumer.

Here in California, however, that's not the case. We are among the ten states that have already barred retailers from charging the fee.
