Man arrested for trying to detonate what he thought was car bomb at Oakland bank

SAN FRANCISCO

Matthew Aaron Llaneza, 28, did not know the device had been rendered inoperable by law enforcement and actually posed no threat to the public. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Llaneza thought he was working with a man connected to the Taliban, but in fact, the man was an undercover FBI agent.

The bank targeted was a Bank of America Branch in the 300 block of Hegenberger Road. Llaneza was arrested when he tried to detonate the bomb.

Llaneza has been charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction against property used in an activity that affects interstate or foreign commerce. He faces life in prison.
