Oakland's Lake Merritt celebrates milestone

OAKLAND, Calif.

Friday, a 750-foot section of the lake channel will be reopened to boaters and kayakers marking the first time in 140 years that the waterway has been open. It's part of a multi-million dollar restoration project to improve the once stagnant and polluted waterway.

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan joined city officials and residents for the opening.

Friday's achievement is just the first of three phases to connect the lake and the Oakland Estuary.

The project will be completed in 2014.
