A familiar and legendary work of art that's come to define San Francisco's Palace Hotel is no more.

The famous Maxfield Parrish Pied Piper painting that's graced the hotel's bar for more than a century has been taken down and will be sold at auction in a couple of months.

Sheraton, which now owns the Palace Hotel, says it's just not practical to have the iconic work displayed in such a public area.

The hotel hopes the auction will bring in between $3 million and $5 million.
