Sequester cuts take effect for California unemployment benefits

SACRAMENTO

Federal unemployment benefits will be cut by 18 percent due to the federal sequester spending cuts that Congress allowed to automatically kick in to reduce the deficit.

The state Employment Development Department sent out notices earlier this month to those who receive unemployment checks, telling them the state will be getting $250 million less from the federal government.

The average unemployed worker will lose $52 per week in benefits.
