A state-ordered audit of PG&E shows the utility failed to spend more than $50 million it collected to upgrade natural gas lines that run through neighborhoods.

The report covers the decade leading up to the deadly San Bruno explosion, which killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes in September of 2010.

According to the chronicle, the audit also shows PG&E has not done enough since the disaster to make up for the lack of safety upgrades. The audit was conducted by Overland Consulting of Kansas for the California Public Utilities Commission.
