Man wanted in Arizona machete attack arrested in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif.

Luis Leyvas Sanchez, 29, was one of two suspects wanted in connection with the Dec. 1 attack in Flagstaff, Ariz., Deputy Marshal Joe Palmer said.

The second man was arrested shortly after the attack, which the victim survived, but Sanchez remained on the run until recently when Flagstaff police developed information that he was in the Bay Area, Palmer said.

Marshals spent about two weeks tracking him down and confirming his residence at a San Jose apartment in the 3200 block of Pearl Avenue before moving in for the arrest, Palmer said.

While they were able to remove two other people from the apartment, Sanchez remained holed up there for a couple hours, Palmer said.

A SWAT team was eventually able to persuade him to surrender without a struggle. Officers entering the apartment later discovered Sanchez had apparently been trying to tunnel through the wall or ceiling to a neighboring apartment, Palmer said.

Sanchez was booked into Santa Clara County Jail and is awaiting extradition to Arizona.
