A mounted police officer who's been a well-known sight at San Francisco's Union Square hung up his spurs on Monday.

Officer Jeff Roth is a 32-year veteran of the San Francisco police force.

As part of a tradition, his spurs were nailed above the front door of the Lefty O'Doul's restaurant.

"Being on a horse is just an unbelievable experience. When you're out there on a horse, everybody's happy to see you," Jeff Roth said.

Officer Roth grew up spending summers riding horses in El Salvador and put his name on the list to become a mounted officer when he was a rookie.
