FBI involved in nursing home investigation

CASTRO VALLEY, Calif.

The Valley Springs Manor in Castro Valley is accused of abandoning 14 patients after it was shut down by the state last week.

Wednesday, one patient was still missing after walking away from the facility. Edmund Bascom, 65, has been missing since Friday. He was last seen wearing a raider's shirt, blue pants, black boots and a fishing hat. This is reportedly not the first time he has gone missing.

The husband of another resident abandoned last week says the whole situation is inexcusable.

"I just don't understand why I wasn't notified ahead of time basically," Gary Wood said. "They should have notified us ahead of time, I would think."

Another facility in Modesto owned by Valley Springs Manor owner Hilda Manuel is also facing closure by the state. Manuel's attorney says residents were never abandoned and that staffing was adequate to meet their needs.
