Navy letter of thanks delivered 67 years later

RICHMOND, Calif.

The letter from former Navy Secretary James Forrestal was dated February 5, 1946 and addressed to Agnes R. Smith. It thanked Smith for her service in "the greatest Navy in the world."

The letter is now with the Point Richmond History Association and they are trying to track down the intended recipient or her family.

"The history association has been excited. Where has it been? It has a very old look to it. It's never gone through the post office a second time," Mildred Dornan said.

The post office says it has no idea where the letter could have been for the past 67 years. Anyone who may know Agnes R. Smith or her family should contact the Point Richmond History Association.
