San Francisco firefighters deliver toys to Tenderloin kids

SAN FRANCISCO

A San Francisco fire truck rolled through the Tenderloin on Christmas morning, surprising children with toys.

San Francisco firefighters Local 798 has been doing this since 1949. It's billed as the largest and oldest fire department toy program in the country. This year they served 60,000 children.

"Oh it's great, it's a great program," firefighter Keith Onishi said. "I've done it for a long time. I've had people come off the street and thank me for the toys later on in their life and I didn't know who these people were. It's an amazing experience."

The toys are donated throughout the past year at Lefty O'Douls and other locations and then handed out in underserved neighborhoods of the city. After Wednesday, toys will be collected for next Christmas.
