Mistake prices watermelons at $91 a piece

A pricing error at an East Bay supermarket sent the cost of watermelons skyrocketing to nearly $100.

The Pak N Save in Emeryville mistakenly priced its melons at $6.99 a pound. Since each weighs about 13 pounds, that puts the cost of a single watermelon at just under $91.

An ABC7 News viewer alerted us to the overpriced melons. We contacted Safeway and they say the watermelons should only cost 49 cents a pound.

Safeway, which owns Pak N Save, says anyone who overpaid for the melons can get a refund.
