Levi's is celebrating the birthday of its founder with a gift to charity. Levi Strauss was born 185 years ago Wednesday. And to celebrate, the company announced its first annual grant supporting causes that Strauss supported.

The recipient is the Edgewood Center for Children and Families. Levi Strauss historian Lynn Downey says it's a charity with a long history.

"In 1854, a year after Levi Strauss arrived in San Francisco, he gave his first known donation to a local charity, he gave $5 to the San Francisco Orphan Asylum," Downey said. "Today that institution is still with us and it is the Edgewood Center for Children and Families."

Edgewood received a $15,000 grant.

Levi's plans to give a grant every year to a charity or cause that was important to the company's founder.
