The naming contest runs through April 15 for two trails in the 60-acre canyon nestled behind the Glen Park neighborhood.
One of the trails is home to many gophers, mice, hummingbirds, sparrows, lizards, California poppies and blackberry bushes and runs on a steep edge on the eastern edge of the canyon, Rec and Park officials said.
The second trail follows the Islais Creek, one of the last free-flowing creeks in the city, and offers expansive canyon views. Many birds, including chickadees and juncos, can be spotted along the path as well as greenery including willow trees, lichen and ferns.
The trails are being revamped through the city's 2008 Clean and Safe Neighborhood Parks bond. The project includes repairs to paths and steps, new fencing and signage and erosion control measures, as well as the restoration of native plants.
When coming up with name ideas, the parks department is asking participants to consider geographic and natural features of the area, historic events and any names of deceased people connected with the park or neighborhood.
