Suspect injured in officer-involved shooting in Alameda County

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif.

At about 5:41 p.m., authorities attempted a traffic stop on a black BMW at Meekland and Smalley avenues in unincorporated Hayward, but the vehicle failed to yield and a pursuit was initiated, Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman April Luckett said.

During the pursuit the vehicle entered onto northbound Interstate Highway 880 from A Street, and police lost sight of the BMW, according to Luckett.

A short while later, however, another deputy spotted the vehicle on Hesperian Boulevard near Grant Avenue in San Lorenzo.

"That's when the officer-involved shooting occurred," Luckett said.

The incident remains under investigation and the exact details of the shooting have not been released, but police did obtain a witness statement saying the deputy acted in self-defense.

"It appeared the deputy fired in order to protect himself from the suspect vehicle," Luckett said.

After the shots were fired, the suspect vehicle continued south toward Hayward, according to Luckett.

With help from the city of Hayward, the suspect vehicle was disabled near Hesperian Boulevard and the on-ramp to eastbound state Highway 92.

The suspect then attempted to flee on foot from the vehicle, but deputies were able to apprehend him, Luckett said.

The suspect, who had suffered a gunshot wound to the arm, was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive, according to Luckett.

The incident remains under investigation tonight. The suspect's identity has not been released.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been with the Alameda County Sheriff's Office for seven years, Luckett said.
