San Mateo officials warn public of failed jury duty appearance scam

SAN MATEO, Calif.

Residents have reported the scam to the sheriff's office of a caller who claims to be a Deputy Sheriff, sheriff's officials said.

The caller tells the person they must pay fees by purchasing a Green Dot prepaid debit card or face arrest, according to the sheriff's office.

A law enforcement agency would never call asking for money or threaten arrest for anyone failing to report for jury duty, sheriff's officials said.

Sheriff's officials remind the public to not provide personal information such as Social Security numbers and credit card information to callers.
