CA population expected to reach 40 million

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- California could be home to 40 million people by the year 2020.

Last year, 384,000 new people called California home. That includes babies who were born here and people who moved here.

In all, California's population is now 39.3 million, making it the most populous state in the U.S.

Texas, Florida, New York and Illinois round out the top five.

The United States has a total population of 323 million.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, one person is born here every eight seconds.
