Federal judge orders Virginia to restore more than 1,600 voter registrations

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin arrives on third day of the Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in Milwaukee.
Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin arrives on third day of the Republican National Convention at the Fiserv Forum, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in Milwaukee.

A federal judge on Friday ordered Virginia to restore more than 1,600 voter registrations that she said were illegally purged in the past two months to keep noncitizens from voting.

U.S. District Judge Patricia Giles granted an injunction request brought against Virginia election officials by the Justice Department, which claimed the voter registrations were wrongly canceled during a 90-day quiet period ahead of the November election that restricts states from making large-scale changes to their voter rolls.

Thomas Sanford, an attorney with the Virginia attorney general's office, told the judge at the conclusion of Friday's hearing that the state intends to appeal her ruling.

The Justice Department and private groups, including the League of Women Voters, said many of the 1,600 voters whose registrations were canceled were citizens whose registrations were canceled because of bureaucratic errors or simple mistakes like a wrongly checked box on a form.

Half of Americans see Trump as fascist, Harris viewed as pandering: POLL

A new poll from ABC News and Ipsos found half of Americans (49%) see Trump as a fascist, or "a political extremist who seeks to act as a dictator, disregards individual rights and threatens or uses force against their opponents."

A majority of voters (65%) also said Trump often says things that are not true.

But Harris also faces perception headwinds, though far fewer Americans (22%) said they viewed her as a fascist.

Fifty-seven percent of registered voters said Harris is making proposals "that just are intended to get people to vote for her," not that she intends to carry out. Just more than half (52%) said the same about Trump.

Trump denies making positive comments about Hitler

Former President Donald Trump is denying he praised Adolf Hitler as having done "some good things," as his former chief of staff and retired Marine general John Kelly was reported to have said this week.

"Never said it," Trump said, answering reporter questions as he campaigned in battleground Nevada on Thursday.

Kelly told The New York Times in an interview that Trump spoke positively of Hitler while in office.

"He commented more than once that, 'You know, Hitler did some good things, too,'" Kelly said of Trump.

Trump also denied saying the comments attributed to him in The Atlantic story.

"No, I never said that. I never said that. It's a rag that's made-up stories before. He's done it before," Trump said.

As a member of Gen Z, Barron -- the youngest of Trump's three sons -- was the one to introduce his 78-year-old father to this new medium, a source close to Trump told ABC News. YouTuber and wrestler Logan Paul was top of mind for Barron, the source noted, and his podcast "Impaulsive" was the first one Donald Trump appeared on, back in June.

It's part of Trump's effort to reach younger voters who may be still establishing themselves or are starting families, honing in on topics like jobs, the economy, the border and safety.
