Source says suspect killed in SF officer-involved shooting was not armed

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco Police Chief William Scott will hold a town hall meeting Thursday at 1 p.m. to talk about the officer-involved shooting in the Bayview last Friday morning.

The officer, whose name has not been released, shot and killed a carjacking suspect who allegedly stole a California State Lottery van on the 1800 block of 23rd street.

Community activist Asale-Haquekyah Chandler says witnesses to the shooting she spoke with told her the suspect was not armed with a gun.

On Friday she and her friends were at the scene of the shooting at the Alice Griffith Housing Development.

At about 10:30 in the morning, police say Keita O'Neil carjacked a state lottery van at 23rd and Arkansas. The suspect drove to the Housing Development as police responded.

The shooting occurred in the 1000 block of Fitzgerald Avenue.

Sky7 was above the patrol car with its side window shattered and blood and clothing near the vehicle.

Police at the scene said an officer fired at least one round, killing O'Neil.

Chandler says her good friend saw it go down.

" He was running, trying to get out from this gate and the officer blew the window off with his gun ...broke the window off and shattered the window and hit him in the head," she said.

A source with knowledge of the investigation gave ABC7 News the same scenario and also told us the suspect was not armed.

We're also learning that the officer graduated from the Police Academy just three days before the shooting. That same source says a Field Training Officer was also in the patrol car with him at the time of the shooting.

Police also detained four others who were seen in a gold SUV travelling with the stolen van.

ABC7 News has learned all four have since been released from custody.

Police retrieved body cameras, which officers were wearing at the scene. They'll review them for further evidence.

The town hall meeting will be held at 1 pm at the SF Community College Southeast Campus at 1800 Oakdale Ave.
