Man arraigned on hate crime charges in SF transgender woman's stabbing

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The San Francisco man accused of stabbing a transgender woman aboard a Muni bus was arraigned Wednesday on hate crime charges. Prosecutors say Brodes Wayne Joynes verbally abused a couple onboard a No. 49 Muni bus Saturday afternoon because of their transgender status. He then followed his victims off the bus and stabbed one of them in the chest.

"I needed 10 stitches to close the stab wounds," Samantha Hulsey, the stabbing victim, said.

Her partner attended Wednesday's arraignment and said the stabbing sends a scary message to the city's transgender community.

"Imagine if all you want to do is go to lunch, and yet between you and lunch is someone who wants to kill you because of the way you look," Rae Raucci, the victim's partner, said.

Joynes is being held on $2 million bail.
