With the trailer jammed under the University overpass, and the tractor stopped at least 50 yards away, traffic on westbound I-80 was backed up all the way from Berkeley to Martinez on this Black Friday.
Apparently, the driver was not wearing a seat belt, and CHP officials hope this collision serves as a reminder about the importance of wearing one.
It took about three hours to clear the accident and open all the westbound lanes.
The driver's name has not been released at this time, but officials said the man was in his 30s.
The truck belonged to a San Francisco trucking company. Damage to the overpass was minor, so CALTRANS allowed traffic to continue on University and underneath.
