WASHINGTON (KGO) -- A new report is raising privacy concerns about the U.S. Postal Service's mail tracking program.

According to the New York Times, an internal audit reveals the postal service approved nearly 50,000 requests from law enforcement officials and its own inspectors last year.

The audit showed some requests were approved without describing the reason or having proper written authorization.

The program called "mail covers" is meant to secretly monitor mail in criminal and national security investigations.
