Andres Mendieta-Velasquez, 29, was arrested in the 1400 block of Cambridge Street near the girl's home. He had been making threats against the girl and the child the past several weeks and indicated he would harm himself, police said.
Mendieta-Velasquez showed up with a large knife in the backyard of the girl's home and was chased away by residents around 10:20 p.m. Sunday, Lt. John McCarthy said. Police responded and arrested him in the area around 11:20 p.m.
Mendieta-Velasquez was arrested for attempted murder, child cruelty and criminal threats. He was booked into the Marin County jail under $1 million bail, police said.
