Badly injured soldier returns to Bay Area

PALO ALTO, Calif.

Jergens lost both legs when the humvee he was riding in hit a roadside bomb last month. Jergens has struggled in his recovery, but has been helped every step of the way by his young wife Jennifer, a Santa Clara native.

"He married his wife, I believe it was December 10, 2010, and a month later he deployed to Afghanistan. And this August is when he was injured. So they've only been married for a month before he was deployed," said James Brown, a Patriot Guard Rider.

Jergens was taken by ambulance to the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, accompanied by a convoy of veterans.
