A building on Harrison Street houses micro-apartments that are 300 square feet. Under the new rules apartments could be as small as 220 square feet, which is about the size of an average parking space.
A developer has created a prototype that would have 120 square feet of living space plus a bathroom, kitchen and closet. The idea is the brainchild of Supervisor Scott Weiner to get more affordable rentals in the city. The rents would be about $1,200 to $1,700 a month, versus the average of $2,000 for a studio apartment in the city.
New York is experimenting with apartments that are 275 square feet. Boston is also experimenting with micro-apartments.
The proposal would only apply to new construction.
