Police maybe one step closer to catching the person who has been stealing crucial pieces of safety infrastructure, thanks to a metals dealer who learned of the thefts from ABC7 News.

Alliance Metals owner Jay Anast believes that his surveillance cameras may have captured video last weekend of one of the men responsible for a rash of guard rail thefts from East Bay overpasses.

His secretary remembered the video footage after watching ABC7 News coverage of the thefts Wednesday night, Anast said.

The footage shows a man attempting to sell pieces of metal similar to metal used on guard rails.

"We didn't have any idea what this was; we knew nothing of the problem," Anast said. "Our weigh master who's instructed if it looks stolen, if it looks unusual, if it looks like something a person shouldn't have, we just refuse it."

Anast plans to hand the surveillance video over to police.
