Cooling centers open around the Bay Area

Sweltering temperatures are expected throughout the San Francisco Bay Area today, with triple digit heat in the South and East Bay, National Weather Service forecaster Bob Benjamin said. A heat advisory has been issued for the East Bay Hills and Santa Clara Valley until 6 p.m.

"Temperatures should be a few degrees cooler today than yesterday throughout the region, but it won't be very noticeable," Benjamin said. However, it will be "notably cooler tomorrow, with temperatures as much as 20 to 30 degrees cooler," he added.

Livermore is expected to reach 102 degrees today, Morgan Hill is looking to be around 99 degrees and the regions surrounding them will be about the same, Benjamin said.

Cooling centers are being opened by cities throughout the heat-afflicted areas to give residents who live without air conditioning a place to cool off. Residents should contact city officials to find the cooling center closest to them.

The National Weather Service extended a red flag warning for the North Bay and East Bay Hills until 8 p.m. tonight.

Near-record temperatures coupled with low humidity and windy weather have increased the danger of fire and prompted the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection to issue high fire danger warnings for much of the Bay Area.

Cal Fire is reminding campers to get permits before starting campfires and to be "extra cautious" in high fire danger areas. Exhaust pipes and mufflers also spark fires if drivers pull vehicles into dry grass or brush.
