An elementary school in Oakland was briefly locked down today after a suspect in a shooting fled to a home near the school and started a standoff with police, an Oakland Unified School District spokesman said.

The standoff started this morning near Markham Elementary School, located at 7220 Krause Ave., according to district spokesman Troy Flint.

A suspect in a shooting elsewhere in the city had fled to a home near the school, and Oakland police surrounded the residence, Flint said.

No one was injured in the shooting, and the standoff ended at about noon when the suspect surrendered, Oakland police Sgt. Ray Backman said.

The elementary school was locked down as a precaution during the standoff, but the lockdown was lifted at about 12:20 p.m., Flint said.
