Officer Tom Coleman slammed into the side of a truck as he followed a suspect's car through an intersection in Redlands, near San Bernardino.
The chase began when the seven-year veteran tried to stop the car for a traffic violation, but the driver sped away, reaching speeds of 100 mph.
Other officers later caught up with the vehicle and took its four occupants into custody.
Coleman leaves behind a wife and two children.
