After nearly a year of remodeling the old Dana headquarters, Health Care REIT will officially be moved in to this 163 acre campus on Tuesday. The remodeling project didn't stray much from the original architecture and that's by design. "We tried to keep the grounds and the overall look of the exterior the same because it is a beautiful building. We opened the building up within itself so we can have more integrated operations," says George Chapman, president and CEO of Health Care REIT.
And the revamped campus uses plenty of green energy including a retention pond, recycled walking trails, environmentally friendly heating and cooling systems, and solar energy. "We have a two acre solar field which will provide 15-17 percent of our electrical needs and there are panels on our roof that give us hot water," says Chapman.
Health Care REIT is a real estate investment trust that specializes in health care properties. Chapman expects the company's portfolio to be worth about $8 billion by the end of this year. "We invest in health care real estate, senior housing, acute care. We have facilities in 39-40 states. We invest across the spectrum of health care."
Health Care REIT is part of the S and P 500 and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, but it's kept a bit of what Chapman calls a quiet profile in its hometown, but that's about to change. "We're well known nationally in health care and by making a commitment to the former Dana facility, it's our coming out locally. We are going to have a much higher local profile. People in Toledo are about to see a lot more of health care REIT," says Chapman.
The company moved to the new headquarters from its old offices at Fifth Third Center. Health Care REIT has about 240 employees around the country with about 100 of them working in Toledo. There will be an open house for community leaders at the new headquarters in October.
