Groups concerned about alcohol sales at new market

SAN FRANCISCO

Community and religious groups are opposed to the way alcohol will be sold at the Fresh and Easy Market on Third Street when it opens Wednesday.

Since the store uses only self-checkout registers, the groups are worried minors will be able to purchase alcohol without restrictions.

A spokesperson for Fresh and Easy says the registers are programmed to stop the transaction when alcohol is scanned. A store employee then verifies the customer's identification before the purchase can proceed.
