A team of researchers says cutting calories doesn't lead to steady weight loss the way people expect and that could undermine people's dieting plans.

Scientists at the National Institute of Diabetes say most plans fail to account for changes in metabolism, muscle loss and other factors that can slow down weight loss.

They've developed a weight loss calculator that can predict what will happen over time to give people a more realistic look at their dieting plan.
