Fleet Week returns to the Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO

The best place to see them is anywhere along the waterfront, from the Ferry Building to Fishermen's Wharf or the Marina Green. There are reserved seats in some of those locations. People will also be watching from rooftops and boats on the bay.

Saturday is the parade of ships. Starting at 11 a.m., the USS Carl Vinson will be the first ship under the Golden Gate Bridge. It used to be berthed in Alameda and is called "San Francisco's Own."

The USS Carl Vinson won't be open but other ships that will dock along the Embarcadero will have free tours. They start at 8 a.m. Sunday and Monday.

This year's Fleet Week is a reminder about the military's humanitarian assistance and disaster response. Thursday on the USS Bonhomme Richard, Oakland and San Francisco city officials met with the military to talk about how they can help when the big one comes.
