It was a big milestone Monday for San Francisco's Buddhist community. Members of the San Francisco Zen Center held a quiet procession from the Sokoji Temple in Japantown to city center in the lower Haight to celebrate the center's 50th anniversary Monday.

The center is home to the oldest and largest Soto Zen organization in the western United States.

Special ceremonies were held before and after the procession.

About 10,000 people visit the Zen Center each year. It also operates the first Zen training monastery established in the West Coast.
