The Vatican is now calling an ancient papyrus fragment a fake which a Harvard scholar says contains the first recorded mention that Jesus may have had a wife.

The Vatican's newspaper says "substantial reasons would lead one to conclude that the papyrus is indeed a clumsy forgery."

The Catholic Church joins a heated academic debate over the text that reads "Jesus said to them, my wife." It was unveiled by Harvard Professor Karen Kling last week as a text from the 4th century.
