Police are seeking a suspect who fatally stabbed a man in San Francisco's Bayview District early on New Year's Day -- the city's first homicide of 2013, a police spokesman said Wednesday.

The victim, identified by the medical examiner's office as 30-year-old San Francisco resident Walter Smith, was found suffering from a stab wound to the neck at about 3:15 a.m. Tuesday near Third Street and Ingerson Avenue.

Smith was taken to San Francisco General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at about 3:45 a.m., police spokesman Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The suspect, described as a bald black man in his 20s, remained at large as of this morning, Shyy said.

Anyone with information about the homicide is encouraged to call the Police Department's homicide detail at (415) 553-1145, the department's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or to send a tip by text message to TIP411.
