Three hospitals fined for putting patients at risk

SAN FRANCISCO

The California Department of Public Health claims Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose did not follow procedures in an emergency situation. St. Mary's Medical Center in San Francisco faces two fines for allegedly not following surgical and medication procedures.

Both hospitals say they have reviewed the incidents and say patient care and safety is their top priority.

UCSF Medical Center was also cited. The state says staff there left a foreign object in a patient after surgery. UCSF says it "has an ongoing program to improve the quality and safety of patient care."

The hospitals can appeal the fines.
