San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera is now front and center in the potentially landmark case of same-sex marriage rights before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Herrera filed a final brief Thursday arguing California's Proposition 8 is unconstitutional and should be overturned.

The state ballot measure passed in 2008 bans marriage for same-sex couples.

Advocates for gay marriage hope the case will pave the way for full equality across the country.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case on March 26.
