San Francisco Pride festivities underway

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco is awash in the colors of the rainbow this weekend. Pride festivities are well underway, with more than a million people expected to join in the festivities.

On Saturday, thousands of people spent the day at and near Dolores Park, despite the ongoing construction.

Saturday evening, nearly 200,000 lesbians, women, and supportive men will gather for the annual Dyke March.

The celebration includes food, music and dancing at Civic Center Plaza.

This is the 44th year for the SF Pride festival, which attracts people from around the nation and the world.

It's a time to celebrate the community's achievements and note the struggles that remain.

As part of the celebration, San Francisco's Twin Peaks is now saturated in pink.

The annual construction of the pink triangle is a tradition of pride weekend. In Germany in the 30s and 40s, the Nazis forced homosexuals to wear the pink triangle in public, and also in concentration camps. The symbol that was used to label and shame has been embraced by the gay community as a symbol of pride.

The triangle is made up of dozens of pieces of pink canvas. The symbol can be seen for 20 miles.
