Osprey chick recently born atop Richmond crane passes away

RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) -- One of the ospreys that was recently born atop a Richmond crane has passed away.

A live look at the nest shows the rest of the family still residing there. The live camera is operated by the Golden Gate Audubon Society.

Two chicks, named Whirley and Rivet, were born in May. Whirley just started flying a week ago and, two days later, she was picked up by a barge crew that found her swimming in the bay.

Wildcare, an organization that helps care for injured wildlife, took her in but found that her injuries were too severe for her to survive.

It's believed Whirley suffered several fractures when she hit the water while trying to learn how to dive for fish.

These sorts of injuries are not uncommon - only about half of osprey chicks survive their first year.
