Auction ends Google's bid for wireless

SAN FRANCISCO, CA

Google has lost its bid to enter the wireless business.

The search engine giant took part in a recent government auction of the airwaves that companies use to provide wireless phone and internet service.

The hope was that the auction would attract new companies, leading to increased competition and -- perhaps -- better deals for consumers.

However, the two big bidders were AT&T, Verizon -- companies that already dominate the industry.
