Investigators say this situation unfolded around 10:30 when a call for help was made about a suspicious person or prowler seen. Two officers first responded to Story Road, which is just behind Amador Drive. The suspect took off running when he saw police - hopping a couple of fences. The chase ended with a violent struggle in the backyard of a house on Amador.

"It's early in the investigation. All I know is a violent confrontation and the officers did what they needed to do to get this person into custody. We're not even sure if he was physically handcuffed. That will all come out with the interviews. And again, CPR was immediately administered and unfortunately the person still died," said Sgt. Mike Sullivan, San Jose police department.

Both officers were also hurt -- one had leg injuries, the other facial lacerations -- they were treated at a hospital and released.

A police spokesperson said that both are seasoned officers who work in special operations which deal with violent crime and gangs.

The suspect was a man in his late 20s, but his identity hasn't been released yet, as this investigation is still underway. But police said they intend to be very transparent on what happened.
