UC gets more money from students than state

There has been a historic shift in the University of California system: for the first time, the total amount that UC students pay in tuition will surpass the funding the system gets from the state of California.

Critics put the blame squarely on California's on-going budget deficits.

Analysts say the dramatic shift is part of a national trend that's changing the nature of public higher education.

Tuition and fees at the UC system for undergraduates now top more than $13,000 a year.
